What’s it like to be an NEAC Scholar?

Our 2024-25 Scholars share their experiences . . .

In 2024, the NEAC awarded three scholarships to Charlotte Houlihan, Theo Dunford, and Rizza Zahid. As their journeys come to a close to make way for a new cohort, they reflect on their experiences and offer advice for those thinking about applying...

Rizza Zahid:

“Being an NEAC Scholar was an incredible experience. I got to learn from amazing artists, push my practice beyond my comfort zone, and experiment in new ways I wouldn't have thought to before. The workshops and critiques were invaluable, and the supportive community helped me grow so much. If you’re thinking about applying, go for it!”

Theo Dunford:

“The NEAC scholarship is a generous opportunity that is valuable to artists of all ages and backgrounds. For me, visiting NEAC artists has been priceless. The chance to exchange ideas and experiences with these motivated artists has been fascinating. I would encourage any artist with a desire to develop their passion to apply for this learning opportunity.”

Charlotte Houlihan:

“I am having the best time this year and feeling a wonderful mixture of challenge and support through the NEAC scholarship. I have tried to approach it with open arms and I am loving exploring different methods, techniques and ideas that are beyond my usual realm of comfort. Sharing the experience with Rizza and Theo has been a joy, and an inspiration to see their work evolve too – I so enjoyed our chats during workshops. Above all, getting to know members of the NEAC and indulging in conversations about painting – which feel so rare in other parts of my life – has been incredible and feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is a huge boost to be supported like this. I would urge anyone thinking of applying to go for it and enjoy the ride!”
