Flowers in the Window – by Daniel Shadbolt

This month, we shine the spotlight on Daniel Shadbolt NEAC whose solo exhibition 'Flowers in the Window' opens on 23 May at  155A Gallery in East Dulwich. Daniel shares with us the inspiration for his new show...

“Painting has always been about remaking what I see . . .

It then became about trying to paint how I see . . .

More recently, the question has become what do I want to see.

I paint less to ‘describe’ things but more to balance an impression on the canvas and to set up a series of ‘equivalences’ that remake the appearance.

Witnessing dusk and the twilight is like making a painting, when the shifts in colour and tone around us alter our senses and affect us. Painting a landscape from the studio becomes an act of ‘willing’ something into being. I like to paint places with an element of familiarity to me.

My studio is infused with anemones, lilac, roses, bluebells, daffodils and tulips. Reflecting in glass and reaching towards the window. The subdued north-facing light has an intimate feel. Making floral compositions in this setting is at the centre of my new exhibition . . .

Solo Exhibition at 155a Gallery

The title of my new exhibition 'Flowers in the Window' is taken from one of the pictures in the show which will feature coastal landscapes, floral still life, portraits and other subjects.

Karen Smith has been running 155A Gallery since 2018. It is a beautiful space in a lovely part of East Dulwich. The entrance is on Bawdale Road, just behind Bora & Sons fruit and veg shop on Lordship Lane. I’ve never seen so many varieties of peaches as they have!

To get there take the overground train from London Bridge. The 185 bus, taken from across the street as you exit East Dulwich, will take you towards the Picturehouse cinema on Lordship Lane, which is very close to the gallery.

The exhibition will be open from 23 May to 9 June 2024 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 12-5pm and Sundays 12-4pm, and by appointment at all other times.”
