Drawing & Composition: 1-day life-drawing workshop with Julie Jackson: LONDON

13 May 2023

A drawing or a painting is based in your response to feelings and sensations …

This 1-day workshop will be a small group of no more than 10 so that each artist will have one-to-one teaching through the day.

A drawing or a painting is based in your response to feelings and sensations. Composition is the art of arranging shapes together in a harmonious way. Creativity is curious, flexible and loves being playful. We can only learn these things by making pictures and mistakes along the way.

We will be working with a model in the studio on one pose all day and you will have the opportunity to move around to experiment with compositions that inspire you. We will start the day drawing on paper or in sketchbooks with:

  1. Thumbnail sketches
  2. Creating a value study
  3. Choosing your composition

In the afternoon you will complete your final study in black and white or colour on your own good quality paper or a painting surface.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR

Julie Jackson is a figurative artist and has taught for many years with the NEAC Drawing School, the British Arts Council’s Creative Partnership, and runs a painting and drawing group. She has won numerous drawing prizes, including the NEAC Drawing Scholarship, The Ondaatje Rolls Drawing Prize, Winner Lloyds Bank Prize, The Fine Art Society Prize and The Bower Drawing Prize. Her inspiration comes initially from the desire to make a painting, to engage with paint, feel the space and make lines and form. “Looking at the world through the experience of drawing and painting, discovering rhythms and connecting with a person’s unique character makes me feel and see better. I love feeling the paint on the surface and its expressive beauty.”

WHAT TO BRING

The studio has easels and drawing boards available. Please bring sketch books, a sheet of good quality paper and drawing or painting materials of your choice.
