Draw from a variety of collection objects in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
You will be working with other like-minded people in a supportive environment; you will be taught a variety of drawing skills and techniques by New English Arts Club Member Neil Pittaway.
The day’s workshop will start with meeting at the Victoria and Albert Museum and consist of short activities and longer more focused sessions of drawing, there will also be a short tour showing some of the highlights of the museums collection and at the end of the day we will view and discuss the work produced and how you can develop this further.
The course is aimed to build confidence in how to work in a public environment and will give you opportunities to learn a variety of observational drawing skills and techniques including how to produce quick sketches as well as more sustained complex drawing(s) looking at inspiring objects from different periods of history.
This course is suitable for every level. Whether you are a complete beginner, or you have done some drawing before and want to improve your skills further, then this is the course for you. The day’s workshop will include techniques on how to approach observational drawing including observational perspective, line, tone and shading as well as other drawing techniques You will also be taught how to use drawing materials and media. This is a great opportunity to draw in a museum setting with expert tuition.
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR
Neil Pittaway was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1973. He studied at Cheltenham School of Art from 1993-96, the University of Bradford from 1996-1998, the Royal Academy Schools, London, 1998-2001 and the University of Huddersfield, 2003-04. Neil is a Member of the New English Art Club (NEAC), the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE), Associate Member of the Alpine Club, London, and an exhibiting Member of Leeds Fine Artists (LFA). His work is in public collections including the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Bankside Gallery, RWS & RE Collection, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; St. Paul’s Cathedral Library, London; Guild Hall Art Library, London; The Arts Club, Dover Street, London; the D.H. Lawrence Museum and Birthplace, Nottingham; the Indian Institute of Contemporary Art, Mumbai, India; and H.M. The Queen, the Royal Collection Trust and The Collection of Heritage Malta. In Neil’s work travel, discovery, the Enlightenment, Gothic revival, satire and historical heritage, are used to create a labyrinth of visual histories.
WHAT TO BRING
- Soft pencils 2B – 6B and or graphite sticks
- Graphite pencils
- Portable sketchbook and or board with a number of plain pieces of drawing paper (Sizes for this A4 to A2 depending on what you are comfortable with carrying)
- Rubbers/ erasers
- Pencil sharpener that can contain pencil shaving
- Masking tape or bulldog clips
- Portable stool / chair (Optional)
- Camera / camera phone (Optional)
Please note the museum will not allow any messy drawing materials /equipment.
The museum has limited portable seating and there are benches in some of the galleries we will be working in.
Please note there is a charge for the cloak room so bring only what you are able to easily carry.
