Drawing into Painting: 1-day workshop with Charles Williams: London

10 December 2022
In this one-day workshop we will explore the relationship of drawing to painting through exercises to expand your capacity as a visual artist

Traditionally, drawing is seen as a way of gathering information in order to paint. The drawing books of the Renaissance masters were sources of imagery for them to use in their paintings, and drawing was a task for apprentices and journeymen. Baroque painters instituted drawing sessions with hired models so that their paintings could gain something from nature that Mannerism had lost; drawing became more of a demonstration of skill and an exercise in looking than a simple note-taking.

How do we deal with it now? In this workshop we will look at the relationship of drawing to painting by spending the day involved in drawing from observation and then in developing the resulting work. These are challenging tasks! But highly useful exercises which will expand your capacity as a visual artist.

The day will consist of a series of exercises to be fulfilled within specific time frames, with individual tuition. There will be group conversations, conducted in a supportive and useful atmosphere. This workshop is about developing your ways of thinking about making pictures, rather than making beautiful finished paintings.
