Drawing at the National Gallery: half-day workshop with Laura Smith: The National Gallery, London

29 June 2025
PRICE: £40 (Concessions available) The National Gallery, London: 13:00 – 16:00

The National Gallery is an absolute treasure trove of some of the nation’s best loved masterpieces. By the time this class runs, the gallery will have been newly renovated for its 200th anniversary. Join Laura Smith for a deep dive into some of her favourite works in the collection.

Laura is passionate about drawing from paintings. She believes that it slows down our looking and allows us to see more deeply into the mind of the artist. She will draw alongside students, sharing her approach to the activity.

The session will begin with a short introduction to the collection and suggestions for drawing subjects. Students will then be encouraged to split off and draw from whichever painting most appeals to them until 3pm.

Students will then gather together and, after a critique of the drawings, spend time walking through the gallery, looking at the paintings drawn and sharing thoughts and ideas. Students will be encouraged to seek out works that speak to them and respond in their own, unique way.

All levels of experience are welcome.
