Drawing from Morandi: half-day workshop with Laura Smith: Estorick Collection, London

London’s Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art is home to an extraordinary collection of work, including beautiful etchings and drawings by the renowned artist Giorgio Morandi.

Tutor Laura Smith has a deep love for Morandi and since it is the best display his work in London, she thought it would make for a special afternoon to focus attention on these pieces. Laura will draw alongside students, sharing her approach to the activity. She is passionate about drawing from paintings, drawings and prints, believing that it slows down our looking and allows us to see more deeply into the mind of the artist.

The session will begin with a short introduction to the collection and suggestions for drawing subjects. Students will then be encouraged to split off and draw from whichever picture most appeals to them.

After drawing, everyone will gather together and spend time walking through the collection, looking at the pictures that were drawn from and sharing thoughts and ideas. Students will be encouraged to seek out works that speak to them and respond in their own, unique way. 

All levels of experience are welcome.
