Artist Statement
Dennis considers that the critic Don Grant writing for the ‘Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster Today’ has composed a statement, rather flattering perhaps, which he would like to use as his own statement: ‘Dennis is a remarkable man. Now in his nineties, he is still painting portraits, nudes, riverscapes & landscapes en plein air. He can also be seen a l’interieur at the bar of the Chelsea Arts Club and the London Sketch Club . . . He is a versatile, if conventional painter, working in oils, pastels and watercolour, with a light touch, and sometimes more than a whiff of erotica in his life studies . . .’
Method of Working
Dennis varies his method of working depending on subject, lighting and also his mood. Mostly he works directly from the subject or else from drawings, sometimes making reference to the drawings and paintings of past masters and very occasionally with reference to photography. The sketchbook is in regular use.
