Artist Statement
Louise captures the emotional impact of landscape in her paintings, particularly the quality of light, using intuitive, gestural brushstrokes. She aims for energy and expressiveness, using the paint to evoke sensations. Her work is in the English landscape tradition of Turner and Constable.
Method of working
Louise’s working practice involves drawing outside in the landscape, using a range of media including watercolour, oil stick, pencil or charcoal. She aims to capture something of the sensations of being in that particular place, with its own specific light and weather. Louise then works in the studio but not directly from the drawings, preferring to work intuitively and allow space for imagination and memory as the painting develops and takes on its own life.
